In summer 1924 Father Antal Bauer planted 32 lavender plants along the southern wall of Tihany Abbey. The diary note is dense — half a page — but contains the key facts: from French Provence seed, germinated in winter 1923 at Pannonhalma.
By 1928 the 32 had become 800; by 1934 the whole southern flank was a lavender field. The war broke the line — only 60 plants remained in 1945.
Two years before the spa opened in 2016, the owner bought back the old Bauer field from the neighbour and replanted. Today's count: 28 — almost what Bauer started with. New planned expansion in 2027.
